Where's my Warp Drive? The Science of STAR TREK

Abstract

When STAR TREK first aired 46 years ago, most of its technical and sociological ideas seemed like far-fetched utopian dreams. Nowadays, not only nerds take many gadgets for granted that would have been science-fiction even for Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. However, teleportation machines, spaceships that can travel faster-than-light or holodecks are not yet sold in your local Media Markt or Apple store.

Will we ever be able to travel to strange new worlds and beam down to greet strange new civilisations? Or will our future be limited to watch reruns of Captain Kirk fighting men in lizard suits sitting in our Apple iHolodeck?
