EMBL Hamburg kick starts a new transnational structural biology project

On the 5th and 6th of December EMBL Hamburg hosted the kick off meeting for the new structural biology project BioStruct-X. The EU funded project, which started on September 1st 2011, brings together a total of 19 partners and is supported by 9 million Euros over 4 years. For the first time it will provide coordinated transnational user access to key methods in structural biology using synchrotron radiation or free electron laser light. more

The 8th Grenoble Hamburg bilateral meeting

Since 2004, EMBL Grenoble and Hamburg scientists meet once a year to share their experiences on new developments on synchrotron oriented structural biology methods. The 8th bilateral meeting held in Grenoble in October this year clearly demonstrated once more, the benefit of such events for the EMBL and synchrotron users. With 37 participants equally distributed between Hamburg and Grenoble, the meeting was particularly successful. more

New structure sheds light on protein modification processes

Scientists at EMBL Hamburg have solved the structure of an enzyme complex which sheds light onto the process of post-translational protein modification in eukaryotic cells. Members of the Wilmanns Group have used structural biology and biochemistry to define the role of the Pex4p:Pex22p complex – an active member of the protein ubiquitination process occurring at the peroxisomal membrane. more

Thousands flock to the DESY campus for the 4th Night of Science

Every two years science institutes and facilities across the Hamburg region open their doors to the general public as part of the Night of Science. On the 29th of October this year a total of 45 institutes, including DESY, took part in the 4th Hamburg Science Night. more

BioStruct-X: Call for proposals

Structural biologists can now apply for access to an integrated, transnational infrastructure of facilities and services via the new BioStruct-X project – a collaboration of 11 European installations, including EMBL Hamburg and Grenoble. more

Record-breaking crystal

Scientists at EMBL Hamburg have set the record for the highest-resolution X-ray crystallography structure of a biological molecule, almost doubling the available data on the small protein, crambin. more

In a ceremony held on the DESY campus on 7 January the agreement contract for the building of the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) was signed. In total, 50 million Euro have been made available for the construction of the centre. more
