Wann beginnt die Existenz eines Menschen? Über die Spannung zwischen dem philosophischen und dem biologischen Aspekt
Die philosophische Definition des Menschen als eines in Freiheit zu moralischem Verhalten fähigen Wesens und die biologische Definition als einem der Spezies Homo sapiens zugehörigen individuellen Organismus konnten bei herkömmlicher Betrachtung vor allem bei Empfängnisverhütung und Abtreibung in Konflikt geraten. Durch die technische Machbarkeit der künstlichen Befruchtung, der genetischen Diagnose und Auslese, des Klonens und der Erforschung von Embryonen und embryonalen Stammzellen hat sich das Spannungsfeld erheblich verbreitert. Embryonenschutz, Menschenrechte, Freiheit der Fortpflanzung und Freiheit der Forschung kommen in Konflikt je nachdem, wo in einem fließenden Prozeß man den Beginn der menschlichen Existenz als einmaliges Individuum setzt.
Empirical criteria of a human being. Embryo, clone, totipotency and individuality: The friction between philosophical and biological concepts of the early phase of human life
Nobody denies that protection of human dignity and of human life sets limits to experimental study and medical utilization of human beings in the early phase of life. However, the application of ethical principles to biomedical research requires the crossing of the border between biology and metabiology. Philosophical terms must be interpreted in an empirically setting. Totipotency as a concept has a philosophical and a biological meaning which overlap in a complex way. And the criteria what in the emphatic sense is a human being depend on what the experimental science is able to do, while knowledge and technical prowess permanently shift the border between the conceivable and the doable. The lecture will explicate the philosophical terms and expound why they are so difficult to apply in an unequivocal sense in practice.
