Public perceptions of science in Italy: implications for animal research
Abstract
The increasing concern about animal rights has sparked public discussions in the use of animals in experiments. The talk will look at how the Italian public perceive scientific research, with a focus on animal experimentation. The speaker will give an overview of the organisations and effort to widen public acceptance of research, and also address the ethical and welfare issues relating to animal experiments.
Biography
Ambra Giulia Marelli is a member in the scientific committee and ex-vice president of Pro-Test Italia, a non-profit Italian organisation which works on promoting public understanding of scientific research. She completed her bachelor degree in biological sciences at the University of Milan, where she carried out experiments with zebrafish and xenopus, and is currently pursuing her masters degree in neuroscience at the University of Pavia, working extensively with rats.
